WEST END HOTEL, MUDGEE.
Owner and licensee, Albert Ernest Gentle.
Mr. McPherson (McPherson and Bawden) appeared for the owner and licensee.
Police inspector Bond deposed that there were no convictions against the hotel. It was a two storey brick building of 12 rooms with five bedrooms available for the use of the public. The stables were of wood. The place was exceptionally well conducted and very clean. The trade was chiefly from the bar.
To Mr. McPherson; The saleyards were situated over half a mile away. The sales were heavy in good years. He heard that a hotel not far from the Woolpack was closed in recent years. The Mudgee Hotel, which was within a mile of the yards, had been closed within the last few years.
Albert Ernest Gentle, owner and licensee, said that the bar takings were £16 a week; and about £3 from the house. The tariff was 6/ a day. Farmers, workmen, and stock dealers mostly patronised his hotel. There was an acre of land adjoining the hotel for the convenience of teamsters and travellers. The two hotels, closed of recent years served the West End section.
John Falkner, residing near Merrendee, said he stayed at the West End Hotel when he came to Mudgee. It catered well for the public.
Thomas Sidney Bayford, retired, a resident of Mudgee, frequently stayed at the hotel for weeks at a time. Everything was up-to-date1
