MINISTER OPENS MOTOR REGISTRY AT MUDGEE
An old blacksmith’s shop and block of flats once stood on the spot where the new Department of Motor Transport building now stands.
The Minister for Transport (Mr. Milton Morris) officially opened the $80,000 building yesterday afternoon.
He said the new Motor Registry at Mudgee was very necessary because of the wide area Mudgee takes in.
Mr. Morris had decided to perform the opening ceremony from inside because the amplifying system had broken down.
But none of the several Municipal Council members or handful of townspeople complained as the modern interior of the office was far more comfortable than standing in the sun.
The Commissioner for Motor Transport (Mr. R. Coleman) said he didn’t want to see the new building become a “white elephant” and urged the people of Mudgee and district to give the staff all possible co-operation.
Mr. Nott M.L.A. and Mr. Evans M.L.C. joined with Mr. Morris in giving best wishes of success with the new acquisition to the town.
The Mayor (Mr. W. Cox) said that the Motor Registry was another form of decentralisation for Mudgee.
“The more of these departments that come into country district the better off we are,” he said.
On a different note Mr. Morris said he was very pleased to report that the number of road fatalities as a result of car accident had shown a steady decrease.”
“We are 50 down so far this year as compared to last year.” But he urged motorists that the figure must improve further.
He expressed his sympathy to Kelletts for the loss of their store through the recent disastrous fire.
After the opening ceremony at which Mr. Cox hoisted the flag at the front of the building, the Motor Registry was open for business and Mr. Tubnor of Denison Street and Mr. Clarry Cohen were two of the first customers1
