1923

12 March 1923
ORIENTAL HOTEL MUDGEE.
Owner, Edward Scifleet; licensee, Frank Samuel Cooling; mortgagors. A. C. Wade and John Davis.
Mr. McPherson (McPherson and Bawden) represented the owner and licensee.
Inspector Bond reported that the building was a two-storey brick house, containing 13 rooms, five of which were bedrooms for the use of the public, the building was old and required renovating or rebuilding. It was well conducted by the present licensee, and the premises were kept clean.
Frank Cooling, licensee, said the building was in first class order. It had 14-inch brick walls, and was one of the best buildings in town. He had two boarders. The hotel was frequented by country people mostly also workers from the slate quarries, motorists, and others. He derived a good trade from the people who attended "Paddy's Market" on a Saturday. The tariff was 6/ a day. There was a garage opposite, and a big skin store opposite that. He submitted a plan of proposed improvements, which included three additional bedrooms and a parlor.
To Inspector Bond: The stable wanted additions, the stalls were good.
Edward Scifleet, blacksmith and owner of the Oriental Hotel, said he would have money spent on the premises to bring it up to the requirements of the board. The bottom of the building had 14-inch brick; walls and the top storey 9 inch walls.
To Inspector Bond: The building was erected in 1887 or 1888.
Arthur Williams, a councillor of the Meroo Shire, residing at Long Creek, said he stayed at the Oriental when he came to Mudgee. The hotel was well conducted.
Michael Kennedy, a resident of Stony Creek, stayed at the hotel, where many other country people came. The hotel was well conducted and customers were well provided for.
MINERS' ARMS HOTEL MUDGEE.
Owner, Percy George Wells; Licensee William Moran; mortgagee, A. C. Wade. Mr. McPherson (McPherson and Bawden) appeared for both the owner and the licensee.
Inspector Bond, in giving evidence, said there was one conviction against the house. The building was a single storey brick one. The number of rooms was 17, and eight bedrooms were available for the guests. There were 13 stalls in the motor shed. The trade was from casual callers, country people, and dining room. The premises were well conducted, but, on his last inspection, a trifle untidy. The house did a considerable trade, situated as it was almost in the centre of the town. The kitchen (detached) was old and required renewing; also the laundry.
To the Board: The Sydney Hotel is far superior to the Miners' Arms. The Miners' Arms compared favorably with the Oriental.
To Mr. McPherson: He would be surprised to learn that the Miners' Arms had been erected within nine years. He would not suggest that the Sydney Hotel was more substantial than the Miners' Arms, it was more commodious.
William Moran, licensee, paid 30/ a week rent, and £33 a year in rates. The receipts from the bar were £50 a week; the takings from accommodation and meals were £15 a week. His business was principally with outside farmers and Workman's sales brought custom. Some of the cricketers made the house their stopping place. The yard was large and convenient for country people. Sometimes there were upwards of 30 vehicles there.
To Inspector Bond: All except the front wall was new. It was a rebuilt building. The kitchen was in bad order.
Percy George Wells, owner, gave evidence that he was willing to have what improvements were required carried out.
Patrick O'Brien, a contractor living at Spring Flat, said he stayed at the Miner's Arms when in town. On a Saturday he did not think there were less than 20 traps in the yard, and he had seen over 50 there. It catered well for meals, and sometimes there were three sittings at the table1 .

CONDITON OF HOTEL.
MUDGEE, Friday.
At the Licensing Court, Mr. G. Grose complained that his hotel, the Oriental, was very damp downstairs, and was in need of repair. He had asked the owner to have the place repaired, but only £4/10/ had been spent on it since he took it over. When Mr. Farrinton, P.M., hinted that he could close the hotel as unfit for habitation, the licensee replied that it would not trouble him in the slightest. The magistrate adjourned the case for a week, and instructed the licensing inspector to submit a detailed report2 .
