FIRE AT CASSILIS. CASSILIS HOTEL AND PRIVATE RESIDENCE GUTTED.
A fire occurred at the Cassilis Hotel, Cassilis, on Tuesday morning last, between the hours of 3 and 4 o'clock. The hotel was a fine building, and was owned by Mr. Cadden, of Sydney, and was leased to Mr. W. A. Saunders.
Mr. Saunders. happened to be away fishing for the night, and did not return home until after his hotel had been completely burnt to the ground. The alarm was first given by rs Saunders, the wife of the licensee, who noticed the smoke in her bedroom, and, jumping out of bed she discovered the whole place was on fire. A large crowd was soon in attendance, and when, it was found that there was no chance of saving the building, they set to work to save the furniture. After some strenuous work by willing helpers a good deal of the furniture was saved, but some was completely destroyed, as also were the books used in connection with the hotel. It is assumed that the fire commenced either in the bar or in the bar parlour. It is understood that the hotel building was insured by Mr. Cadden. the owner. The building next to the hotel, which is the residence of Mr. T. J. Piper, and which is the property of Mr. E. J. Scully, of Coolah, was also burnt to the ground, but the furniture was saved. This building was insured in the Standard Insurance Co. for £25012 .
