FIRE "DOPE"
Attempt to Burn Hotel
MUDGEE, Thursday.
Using cotton waste steeped in kerosene as a kindling, an incendiary made an attempt to burn down the Cullenbone Hotel, near Mudgee, last night.
The outbreak was discovered through smoke fumes coming through the open window of the dining-room into the room where the licensee, Mr. Percy Barton, and his wife slept.
When the fire was extinguished with the aid of buckets of water a large hole was found to have been burnt in the side wall and much of the timber scorched.
The saturated waste was placed alongside the bottom of the board building on the outside. Had the window not been open, permitting the smoke to pass through, the building probably would have been destroyed. The police visited the scene with a black-tracker, but were unable to pick anything definite out of the confusion of footprints in the locality3 .
