Bushfire threat to Cassilis stations

Lightning caused two bushfires on well-known Cassilis properties, “Dalkeith” and “Tongy” over the weekend, but fortunately the fires were arrested in their early stages.

More than 100 men, involving about seven fire brigades, travelled to the outbreak at “Dalkeith”, on Sunday.
The fire broke out on the 25,000 acre property at about 3 p.m., following several lightning bursts earlier in the day.
The flames swept through a grazing paddock adjoined to the Rotherwood Road.

Firemen and volunteers had the fire under control by about 5.30 p.m.

The fire on “Tongy”, which began at about 2.30 p.m., burnt about 100 acres of grazing land on the north-eastern side of the property.
Uarbry, Talbragar, Hannah’s Bridge and Turill fire brigades attended the outbreak, and soon had the flames under control.

Any fresh outbreaks of fire were discouraged on Sunday night when in a half-hour deluge the area soaked under 112 points of rain.
Landholders were very grateful to the assistance and quick action of the fire brigades, and volunteers who worked to bring the fires under control.

Mudgee bush fire controllers when contacted this morning said that no serious outbreaks had as yet occurred in this area1 .
