WHERE BEAUTY IS
A WILDERNESS WAS
Market Square in the 90's
WHERE the beautiful Robertson Park, with its wealth of glorious flowers, now stands, there was once a wilderness of grass and weeds. In fact, it was even suggested that live stock be allowed to graze there. That was 41 years ago. The good folk, of those days had no idea that their Market Square would be turned into a lovely garden with an impressive memorial. If they had the ignobility of then grazing suggestion would have struck them in all its horror. However, the council was not at that time what might be described as extremely wealthy, and the well-meant suggestion was made with the idea of raising enough capital for the erection of a lamp in the square.
The following clippings from "Guardians" of 1894 tell us all about it:- Market Square is developing weeds and grass since the late rain. The hard up council might make a tenner a year by letting the enclosure for a couple of quiet nags and a cow to graze in. This would enable the council to have a gas lamp erected in the square. Perhaps the suggestion will not be lost on Ald. Cameron3
