Lue Public School.
Mr. Young, the able headmaster of the Lue Public School, is to be complimented on the recent successes achieved by the pupils attending his school. In the Commonwealth Writing Competitions Edward Miskle secured the second prize for boys under 14 years, and Stanley Abbott won similar distinction for boys under 13. The latter just missed the medal for his class by one mark. Mr. John Shute, of Lawson's Creek, has evidently an opponent worthy of his steel in Mr Young2 .

Student Exam Result

Lue Public School.
Master Earl Francis Walsh, a pupil of Mr. Young's, at Lue Public School, recently secured 80 percent of the total marks at a competitive examination for the position of telegraph messenger. This is a scholastic success, and worthy of congratulations, but we question the advisability of a clever young lad, like young Walsh, entering a department where his innate ability will have no chance of developing and where his remuneration will never be more than a mere pittance3 .

Last week Mr. Alexander, Government Architect, pegged out a site for a new school and teacher's residence opposite Mr. Thompson's hotel. The school will be capable of seating 90 children. The new situation is much more central and more convenient than that of the existing building, which is nearly three miles from the township4 .

Tenders to be Invited.
Mr. W. F. Dunn, M.L.A., has received from the Department of Public Instruction a letter to the effect that the Minister had approved of tenders being invited for the erection of a new school building and teacher's residence at Lue. This matter has been referred to the Department of Public Works, with a view of the necessary action being taken5 .

Farewell at Buckaroo
Mr. McKinnon and Family Entertained.
A very pleasant little function eventuated on Friday night last at Buckaroo Public School residence, on the eve of the departure of Mr. G. N. McKinnon, who has been appointed to the school at Lue. Upwards of 50 friends of the departing teacher met to bid him farewell. Dancing and games were indulged in. Miss M. Roth supplied good music on the piano, and the duties of M.C. were performed by Mr. J. Smith. At 11 o'clock refreshments were handed round. After ample justice had been done to the tasty refreshments, Mr. Fred. Muller was voted to the chair.
The chairman said he was pleased to have the honor of presiding at such a friendly meeting. He read apologies for non-attendance from Mr. Pearson, Senior School Inspector, and several friends. He thanked Mr. H. C. W. Kear (Mudgee). who, he said, was always willing to assist at functions of this description whether in town or country. He also thanked Mr. Phillips (of Tait's Touring Theatre) and Mr. S. Randell (visitors). He said the object of their meeting there that evening was for the purpose of tendering a farewell to Mr. McKinnon and family with regret, mingled with feelings of pleasure - regret because they did not care to lose a good friend, a good teacher and a good citizen: pleasure because they knew full well that their loss would be to others' advantage. Mr. McKinnon was leaving them at his own request. He (the chairman) thanked the ladies and gentlemen who were so thoughtful in bringing this little function to such a successful issue. He then, on behalf of the ladies and gentlemen assembled, presented Mr. McKinnon with a handsome inkstand and pen as a small token of esteem and gratitude for past valuable services. He hoped that Mr. McKinnon would receive the gift, not so much for its intrinsic value, but in the same spirit in which it is given.
Mr. McKinnon fittingly replied.
Messrs. E. S. Moore and H. C. W. Kear then spoke of Mr. and Mrs. McKinnon's many good qualities, and wished them every success in their new home at Lue.
The Chairman then presented Mrs. McKinnon with a neat case containing a hair brush and comb.
Mr. Kear responded on the recipient's behalf.
The following toasts were proposed and honored: - "The King," by Mr. Fred. Muller; "Our Guests," by Mr. Moore, responded to by Mr. McKinnon; "The Visitors," by Mr. Harris, Mr. Phillips responding: "The Ladies." by Mr. Moore, Mr. Randell responding; "The Chairman," by Mr. Kear, responded to by Mr. Muller.
Dancing (interspersed with songs) was resumed, and continued for a time, after which the singing of "Auld Lang Syne" by the company brought to a close one of the most pleasant functions ever held at Buckaroo6 .

17 March 1913
Lue's New School
Formally Opened.
On Friday afternoon last the new Lue School was formally opened by Mr. W. J. Johnson, M.H.R. During the earlier part of the day the grounds were peopled by a large gathering of children and adults. A sports programme was gone through, and toys and edibles were distributed gratis amongst the happy youngsters.
In declaring the new school open, Mr. Johnson congratulated the district in having such a splendid school. He remarked that it was one of the best buildings of its kind that he had seen. He also complimented the Department on the designing, and Mr. Murphy and his assistants on the way the design had been put into form. Mr. Johnson also eulogised the education system of New South Wales and urged the young people to take advantage of the educational facilities that were now within their reach.
Amid cheers Mr. Johnson took a silver Yale key, threw back the door, and formally declared, the school open.
Mr. Thompson and Mr. A. Murphy (supervisor) also spoke.
Mr. Ryan was Chairman of the proceedings, and briefly introduced the speakers.
The silver key, which is to be suitably inscribed, was presented to Mr. Johnson.
After the official opening, the sports were proceeded with, Mr. McKinnon, the new teacher, who is already popular. leaving no stone unturned to make the day one of enjoyment for all, children and adults alike.
At night a dance was held. There was a big attendance, and the company kept things moving till 5 a.m7 .

9 April 1914
The Lue school children have formed a C.C., and journeyed to Havilah, and played a match with Mr. Smart's (teacher) school boys. The return match will be played on Easter Saturday at Lue. Lue won the game played on the 21st. and are anxious for another8 .

12 August 1915
A LUE FUNCTION.
A most enjoyable dance took place in the Lue school residence in the form of a surprise party to the local school teacher, to celebrate his birthday. There were about 15 couples (present. Refreshments were handed round at 12 o'clock. Mr. R. Ambler carried out the duties of M.C. admirably, while first-class music was supplied by Messrs. Roy Donnelly, Stan Abbott, and little Len McKinnon (violins). There were quite a number of willing musicians9 .

27 April 1916
Miss B. O'Connell, assistant teacher here, has resigned her position, and is about to enter the Perthville Convent. We wish her all prosperity. She did her duty conscientously, and was well liked by the children10 .

19 June 1916
TRANSFERRED TO LUE.
Miss R. Magner, who has been assistant teacher at the District School for the past two years, received notification to proceed to Lue Public School, as assistant, last week. Miss Magner was very popular amongst the 'little people' of the District School, and will be much missed by the pupils of the Infants' Department11 .

LUE WINS
School Garden Competition
LUE residents should feel proud of the fact that their school garden gained first place in the competition for school gardens for Mud gee and district. A stroll through the school grounds would convince anyone that the prize was most justly awarded. The brilliance of the myriad-hued phlox, dianthus and gorgeous bedding petunias is magnificent to speak nothing of the many other shrubs and flowers among which are chaster daisies, calliopsis, miniature sunflowers, and a trellis of beautiful roses of the best types.
When one considers the disadvantages of gardening in a country centre, where the soil is rocky and unfertile with little or no water for garden use, the deep trenching and loads of soils and manure that are brought in a wheel-barrow to replace the poor soil from the trenches we realise the sterling qualities of those who toil untiringiy to attain the desired effect not only in the garden, but in all things pertaining to the school and training of the pupils. The teacher, Mr. L. A. Howarth, has made wonderful progress. The display of school-work in Mr. Thompson's window in chip carving and basketry is excellent and beautiful15 .

Lue Children's Great Effort
The Lue Public School children, under the direction of the popular school teacher, Mr. Curnow, made a great effort in connection with the recent scrap-rubber appeal. From that sparsely settled centre they obtained no less than 100 tyres. The children lost a number of tyres which they hung in a tree when a wayfarer lit a fire at the base of the tree and the tyres became ignited16 .

P. & C. ASSOCIATION
The usual monthly meeting of the Lue P. and C. Association was held in the school on Tuesday of last week, the following members being present: Mr. W. Nicholls (president), Mesdames. C. Braithwaite, A. Potts, M. Gleeson, E. Rayner, Messrs.J. Walsh, C. Smede, B. Walsh, E. Lord, J. Maloney, J. Batten, G. Jones, E. Martin (hon. treasurer) W. Riches (hon. secretary) and J. Campbell.
Principal business centred around the celebration of Education Week, and a committee of five was set up to organise affairs. The celebration will include an "open day," at the school, a film night, folk dancing, puppet shows, and tree planting.
It was reported that the dance held in aid of Association funds had been very successful despite the inclement weather. A profit of over £17 was anticipated.
A decision was reached that a working bee be held at the school on Saturday after noon, July 31, to prepare for the tree planting, also to erect posts for the basketball ground. The posts for the latter have been donated by Mr. John Maloney.
September 25 was fixed as the date for the school sports, when school athletes will strive for selection in teams to participate at the P.S.A.A.A. meeting in Mudgee on October 8.

This new installation at Lue Public School means more than just play equipment
The installation of new play equipment might not be as exciting for adults as it is for the students who get to use it, but for Lue Public School it's the result of a nearly two-year-long journey for the small school.

As part of a COVID-19 program by the NSW Government, the school received enough money to buy the new equipment as long as they could themselves raise $45,000, 30 per cent of the overall cost. The state government contributed the remaining $105,000.

The school was able to raise their share thanks to groups and businesses like Moolarben Coal who gave $5,000, the Kandos Charity Shop who gives $6,000 to the school every year and intrepid residents who share their empty cans and bottles every week for the school to take to the local return and earn station.

"Sometimes I come in on a Monday morning and I've got boxes of cans, which we then take to the recycling place in Rylstone. I think $1,800 was one of the donations that came just from recycling cans and bottles," School principal, Caron McDonald said.

"We actually used it as a way the children could improve their math skills as well. So we have a bit of a goal and we graph how much we've got, and how much more do we need to get to the goal. It was a whole project for the school that was basically embedded in what the children were learning in the classroom as well."

The equipment was designed to cater to students with disabilities and occupational therapy requirements19 .
