Names of Successful District Candidates.
We print today a list of the successful candidates who sat for the qualifying certificate examination in this and adjoining districts. All the candidates took the same examination papers as the city boys and girls. Under the Bursaries Endowment Act., the bursaries allotted by the board are divided in the ratio of school population. This works out, so that one-third of the Bursaries are given to candidates from Sydney and suburbs, and two-thirds of the bursaries go to the country districts. These bursaries and scholarships are tenable at the country high schools or the district schools, but the names of the successful bursars and scholars will not be available until next week.

GENERAL NEWS.
THE LATE R. GEORGE PIPER
The late Mr. George Piper was born at Cassilis on October 6, 1841. His father (the late Mr. James Piper, who died on December 28 1865) was then proprietor of the old Cassilis Hotel, which was then situated just about the site of the new Commercial Bank, now in course of erection. He attended the Denominational School at Cassilis for a period, but his education was mainly received at Maitland. During his lifetime he followed pastoral pursuits and hotel-keeping, conducting the Cassilis Hotel for a period of about 30 years. In later life he lived in retirement at the ''Parsonage," Cassilis. Afterwards he went to Ashfield, where he lived for a few years. Selling his property there he went to Mudgee, and he and Mrs. Piper resided with their daughter, Mrs. Armstrong, at the Imperial Hotel, Mudgee, until the time of his decease. During his lifetime he took an active interest in all public matters in Cassilis and district held the secretaryship of many different concerns. On October 14, 1879, he was appointed a member of the Cassilis Public School Board. The old minute books now in possession of his sons, make very interesting reading as chronicles of the old Cassilis days:
The first meeting held at Cassilis for the purpose of taking steps for the establishment of a school, was held on June 2, 1875, there being present the Rev. W. S. Wilson in the chair (uncle to our present vicar). W. Braggett (father of Mr. W. J. Braggett), R. Byfield (store-keeper), W. T. Lee (Postmaster), Jas. Wilson (manager of Llangollan), T. Braggett (hotelkeeper), M. Parker (auctioneer), A. Hinds (contractor), J. Mack, A. Mitchell. J. Quinn, G. Phillips (Llangollan), J. Addison. The present school was erected during 1876 at cost of £1406, Mr. Jas. Pritchard, of West Maitland, being the contractor. The official opening took place on Wednesday November 15, at 11 a.m., by Mr. W. T. Lee, Postmaster, on behalf of the Public School committee. Mr. Jas Buchanan was the first teacher appointed, and he died of an apopletic stroke on December 14, 1878. On August 8, 1877, Mr. George Lovegrove's (father of Mr. Ambrose Lovegrove, of Hampton) tender was accepted for additions to the Public School at a cost of £179.
Documents relating to the opening of the bridge over the Munmurra, show that the function took place on December 6, 1878. This bridge is still in existence, but sadly needs repairing.
Mr. Piper was for many years a trustee of public roads, and during his regime, the road from Cassilis to Ulan was constructed.
Mr. Piper was a lover of a good horse, and took a keen interest in horse racing, being a prominent member of the Racing Club. Mr. Piper's genial personage, and integrity of purpose won for him the highest esteem of all his associates. His remains now lie at rest in the pretty little Anglican cemetery in the town in which he spent the greater part of his life. His death removes the oldest native of Cassilis4
