Colonial home in Mudgee

Oakfield, the 1840s Mudgee district property, has been listed for an October 13 auction by former Westfield executives Ian Newton and Judy Hall. The Balmain couple have decided after five years to return full-time to Sydney to pursue a private property development. Hugh Bateman from The Property Shop expects more than $2 million for the 40-hectare holding. Oakfield is on Lue Road at Lawsons Creek, four kilometres east of Mudgee. The restored colonial house, surrounded by English-style garden and herb patch, was part of a land grant in the 1830s to Lieutenant William Lawson. The homestead has high ceilings and polished timber floors in large rooms. The property first sold in 1850 to Alexander Cox, remaining with the Cox family until 1965. The grounds have a studio, a separate indoor pool, tennis court and a nine-hectare olive grove. Since last sold in 2002 by the Wheeler family, its 10-hectare vineyard has been removed3 .
