Gidget House offers new support for parents

From front page Gidget House Mudgee at Blooms The Chemist is set to offer free GP-referred, specialist counselling sessions.

Blooms has set up a special private room in their store where parents can access these services.

"Perinatal depression and anxiety still carry a degree of stigma, and parents may not know that support is available, even in the most remote parts of the state," Sally Whiting from Blooms The Chemist Mudgee said.

"We hope that having a Gidget House within our local community will increase awareness and support access for potential, expectant and new parents."

Important service Member of the Legislative Council and Select Committee on Birth Trauma, Stephen Lawrence MLC officially opened Gidget House and said parents should not have to feel like they can't seek help.

"This is such an important service for the people of Mudgee," Mr Lawrence said.

"The issue of mental ill health that new parents experience is an issue that has taboos and silences and is not talked about.

"That has certainly changed but the issue of service provision is another whole issue.

"Blooms the Chemist in Mudgee will be hosting Gidget House where parents are able to access these services and get referred onto more specialist services, so that is a fantastic thing."1
