John Carlisle Feature
A Country Man
John Carlisle is essentially a country man
Born at Mudgee, he has been associated with the land practically all his life, first at Ulan and later at Mullamuddy. John was reared at Ulan, where his father owned a property. Later, both father and son bought properties at Mullamuddy, and John stayed there for 10 years before going into the garage business at Lue. John says his practical experience on the land has proved invaluable in his work with farm machinery and tractors. “It has given me a first-hand knowledge of the farmer’s needs and his problems”, he says. Combined with this is a natural flair for “mechanical things”, plus many hours of study and at the local technical college. A very personal interest in his customers, many of whom he has known personally for years, is another “plus factor” he takes to the business. John is a married man with three children-two boys, one girl. They live in Lue and plan to stay there indefinitely, although John travels daily to Mudgee. The Mudgee branch of John Carlisle has been established with an eye to the future. Situated in Church Street, the premises have been especially designed to allow for expansion. At present they are attractive but not imposing. The office and reception area are set well back from the street, with a spare parts section set up at the rear. In the front is an open showroom for the machinery. In 10 years time, these same premises will almost certainly be a show place. For they have been built in such a way that they can be extended both towards the street and out the back. The Carlisles plan eventually to extend the premises to the street with a glass showroom. At the back they are looking to the day when more spare parts sections and possibly more offices are needed. At present, however, John Carlisle’s Mudgee branch aims to provide to his customers the convenience of sales, spare parts and office facilities in a central position. All servicing is still done at Lue, but many miles of travelling has been cut out for the customer in the establishment of the Mudgee office. John Carlisle’s Customers come from as far away as Glen Davis, Bylong and Capertee, and, to the north-west, Leadville and Dunedoo. For many of them, as well as Mudgee customers, the opening of the Mudgee branch will be a real boon1

John Carlisle’s Success Story
The story of John Carlisle is a success story which has surprised even John himself. It is the old, old story of big things coming from small beginnings. For John, who just recently opened a brand new branch of his tractor and farm machinery business at Mudgee, those small beginnings were at Lue. In July 1965, Lue’s only garage was auctioned - and there were no bids. About the same time, John Carlisle, who “always had an inkling for mechanical work”, was interested in leaving the land at Mullamuddy and perhaps starting a backyard machinery business in Mudgee. So when it was decided to sell the tools at the Lue garage, John was interested. Little did he know that his buy would include more than just tools! John and his wife Joan looked at the Lue garage and immediately decided it had potential. The garage already had the David Brown agency, but at this stage John was not particularly interested in selling. His main interest from the start, however, was in tractors and farm machinery - their servicing and repair. In the words of his wife, “John just discovered he could sell”. For the first 12 months, they had worked happily in the normal business of a garage. John doing the mechanical work and Joan looking after the office. The turning-point came when one customer ordered a tractor. John became engrossed in the brand new machine and immediately developed a new interest. He began going after business until finally, in about September 1966, he had to employ a mechanic while he looked after the sales side of the business. The business at first was confined to the Lue district, but as John became more and more renowned through newspaper and radio advertising and through his customers, the area he covered continued to grow. In April, 1968, he saw the opportunity to consolidate the David Brown area by opening an office in Wellington. This “closed the gap” in the area which he covered and was the “real reason” for his not opening in Mudgee first. He finally opened the Mudgee branch on October 1, this year. John Carlisle now employs two mechanics (David Baskerville and Brian Keech) and an office assistant (June Keech) at Lue, a manager, full-time salesman and mechanic at Wellington, and two full-time salesmen (David Donnelly and Athol Leaney) and an office assistant (Dianne Farrell) at Mudgee. John himself works daily at Mudgee while Joan looks after the finances of the whole undertaking. And their business hasn’t stopped growing. Mudgee Guardian, Friday 12 December 1969, p. 10.
