Airly (Co. Roxburgh) 33°07’S. 150°02’E., 27 km N. of Portland, on Gap Ck; estab. By Genowlan Shale Co., village gaz. 1897, lots sold 1898, thrived 1883-1908, failed by 1918; formerly oil-shale mining (oil-shale disc. 1883 by Bulkeley, J. Larkin, Massey, Melliday, and S. Nicholson) till 1903, now coalmining; coalmines: Centennial Coal Pty. Ltd., estab. 2010, and Torbane Tunnel; gale 1901; landslide1913; miners’ strikes 1900-2, 1904, 1907-8; oil-shale mine (Genowlan Shale Co.) 1883 (adits. Incl. Davis’s Heading, Elliott’s Heading, Oxley’s Heading, Penrose No. 1 Tunnel, Porter’s Bord, Sinclair’s Heading), acquired 1895 by Aust. Shale Syndicate Ltd., taken over 1897 by Aust. Kerosene Oil & Mineral Co., closed 1903, reopened 1903 by Aust. Shale Syndicate Ltd., acquired 1906 by Commonwealth Oil Corp. Ltd., taken over 1916 by Commonwealth Oil Federation, closed 1918; PO 1897-1920; school (Genowlan till 1910) 1897-1920; tramway (mineral) b. 1897-1900; whooping cough epidemics 1901 and 1917; pop. 406 (1901), 234 (1911).1
