Torbane (Co. Roxburgh) 33°06’S. 150°01’E. 27 km N. of Portland, on Torbane Ck.; orig. New Hartley; thrived 1883-1908, failed by 1918, dismantled 1920, razed 1926; oil-shale; brickworks (incl. 3 kilns. One b. 1908); measles epidemic 1910; miner’s strikes 1911 and 1914; PO 1902-20; railway turntable 1902, 50 ft (15.2 m), replaced 1903, 60 ft (18.3 m), ruined; 40 retorts (Hall-Palmer type, for oil-shale) b. 1900 by NSW Shale & Oil Co. Ltd., acquired 1906 by Commonwealth Oil Corp. Ltd., which built a bench of 32 Pumpherston retorts, company went into liquidation 1912, retorts closed 1913, reopened 1916, closed 1918, dismantled, but experimental one (Schultz) erected 1925 by Torquay & Anglesea Oil Co.; RS 1897-1974; school 1901-20; tramway (mineral) b. 1896-1900; pop. 113 (1901), 296 (1911)1 .
