Clandulla Flatlands should not be confused with the earlier settlement known as Flatlands, which was the home of James Vincent. Vincent’s Flatlands was located around the area that later became known as Chester.

In the 1880s, during the construction of the railway line through the region, John Nevell of Deridgeree and his son Joseph settled in the area that would come to be called the later Flatlands. The Nevells initially lived in a nearby cave while building their house. They supplied meat, primarily beef, to the railway fettlers and other workers.
