ULAN STONE HOUSE WILL BE RESTORED
The well known Ulan historical land mark, “the old stone house” on the Cassilis road three miles north of Ulan has been sold.
It was purchased by Miss Rowen Dorrell of Sydney.
Miss Dorrell bought the house from Mr. Walter Roberts, of “Havelock” who has owned it for the past 18 years.
The old stone house is situated near the Goulburn River on No 1 block of land in the Parish of Ulan.
It was selected by John McDonald over a hundred years ago, and it is thought that the stone house may have been built before the land was selected, which was often the case in those days. It is said that the house was built by convicts.
The Stone House has changed hands a number of times and was owned by several well known pioneer families of the Ulan area. the Byers family and later the Carr family, other names associated with it are Moir, Keyes and Taylor.
In the days of horse drawn mail coaches the “Stone House” was a changing place for coach horses on the Mudgee - Cassilis mail run, and prior to 1894 it was conducted as a hotel by the late Mr. Jack Moir of Ulan, (who was an uncle of Mr. Alva Nevell of Gulgong and the late Mr. Ira Nevell of “Claralla” Turill).
A welcome is extended to Miss Dorrell who came from England almost nine years ago, and who is an art teacher at Blackfriars Correspondence School in Sydney.
Most people, especially those who have lived at the “Stone House” and have sentimental interests in it will be delighted to hear that Miss Dorrell hopes to eventually restore it to its original appearance and have holiday guests in a true pioneer setting we wish her good luck in her ventures1
